About nbn® speed tiers. Your nbn® plan’s speed tier refers to the maximum possible download and upload speeds available on that plan outside of peak usage periods. In practice, the speeds you experience may be lower, particularly during the busy evening hours, and can also be influenced by factors such as the technology type at your address, the quality of your location’s wiring and equipment, the capability and placement of your modem or router, and overall network demand at the time of use.

location

Metro Areas

The technology used at your premises depends on the network rolled out in your area.

NBN Fibre To Premises (FTTP)

This where a fibre optic line is installed all the way to your premises.

NBN Fibre To Node (FTTN)

Fibre is installed in a newly built cabinet nearby on the street and then connected to the existing copper network.

NBN Fibre To Building (FTTB)

Fibre is installed to a building. The fibre is connected to a cabinet in the building.

Hybrid NBN Fibre Coaxial (HFC)

Used where the existing cable network can be used to reach the premises.

location

Regional Areas

In regional and remote Australia, nbn® reaches you over the air or from space.

Wireless

NBN Fixed Wireless sends data from a transmission tower wirelessly to an antenna fitted by an nbn-approved installer on the premises roof.

Satellite

In some remote and rural locations, services on the nbn network are delivered via satellite. A satellite dish is installed on the premises and receives the nbn network signal from the satellite.

Common questions

Business nbn® FAQ

The NBN download speed you can achieve at your premise is influenced by many factors. How close you are to the node and the quality and age of the copper running from the node to your premises are determiners of network speed.

The NBN network uses a range of technologies to deliver higher internet speeds across Australia. NBN aims to deliver at least 50 Mbps download speeds to 90% of fixed-line premises.
